ICAO-COMPLIANT BIOPASS E-PASSPORT SOFTWARE TOOLKIT
|
| |
|
Introduction
With the rising threat of global terrorism that has sprung up in increased proportions
in recent years, Governments all over the world are forging ahead with initiatives to tighten their
homeland security and removing threats that may arise from external and internal entities.
|
|
|
One significant area of concern is border control, and the International Civil Aviation Organization,
ICAO has specified the use of biometric information in electronic documents like the passport to curb
the problem of identification forgery at the border and immigration control lines. ICAO has specified
the use of biometric information to be mandatory used in Machine Readable Passports or MRP.
|
|
Border authorities have already begun and initiative efforts to follow these specifications,
to include mandatory facial scans and optional fingerprints and optional iris scans of passengers
in an electronic smart passport, stored on contact less smart chips. The smart passport is subsequently
protected by the highest possible security techniques in the market today.
|
| |
|
We recognize that immigration authorities are now in aggressively trying to move into the implementation
and deployment of their country’s smart passport. In response to this requirement, NTS has developed and
launched the BIOPass suite of integrated software systems and toolkits to aid border control solution
providers rapidly move into this area in a timely and risk free manner.

The BIOPass e-Passport Software Toolkit (BEST) is an application level interface (API)-based toolkit
that provides software developers, system integrators and total solution providers a quick and easy means
to read / write ICAO compliant data structures, and perform key operations critical to the immigration
procedures. BEST is available for Microsoft operation systems such as Windows XP, 2000, PocketPC and
Windows CE.NET.
|
|
The BEST toolkit provides function level support for the Logical Data Structure as defined by
ICAO in their Technical Report: TR-LDS specification version 1.7 and TR-PKI version 1.1.
The toolkit also supports hash and signature generation with SHA-1, SHA-256, RSA, and SC37 Biometric
